Cabins in Pyhätunturi
Slope-side stays and forest hideaways on the edge of Pyhä-Luosto National Park
Pyhätunturi - Pyhä, if you live here - is a fell village in the municipality of Pelkosenniemi, pressed against the southern edge of Pyhä-Luosto National Park. It is small. You can walk it end to end, and the slopes, the shop and the restaurants are much the same distance from any door. Most of the cabins we manage are here, and from most of them you walk to the lift or the trail rather than drive. On a February morning that is not a small thing.

The village and the fell
The fell is a long ridge of very old rock with the village in its lap. The slopes face the houses, so the lifts, the ski school and the places to eat sit inside the same few hundred metres. Behind the ridge the national park starts at once: marked trails leave the car parks and climb straight onto the tops, and Isokuru cuts into the rock a short way out of the village, steep-sided and dim at midday. Over a week that means you can ski in the morning, eat lunch at the cabin because it was easier than queuing, and be walking in the park by two, without moving the car.
Winter on Pyhä
Snow is usually down well before Christmas and stays into spring. The week most people end up having: a few mornings on the fell face, a few days on the cross-country trails, one on snowshoes, an afternoon with reindeer or dogs at a farm nearby. The midwinter light is the part nobody expects. At three in the afternoon in January the snow is blue, the sky behind the fell is the colour of a peach, and it stays that way for an hour. When it is clear, the northern lights come out over the village itself - no booking, just a dark window and some patience.
Summer and autumn colour
The nights do not get dark up here, which changes what a day is: people set out at eight in the evening because nothing stops them. The trails around Pyhä dry early, and they run from short loops out of the village to the long routes across the national park. Late summer is berries and mushrooms; the rivers and lakes are there for fishing and for a boat. Then ruska, the autumn colour, burns through the dwarf birch and the ground cover for two or three weeks and the village empties out. A cabin at its dearest in February is a different proposition in September.
Getting to Pyhä
Most people fly to Rovaniemi and drive from there; Kittilä and Kuusamo work too, depending on the flight. The nearest railway station is Kemijärvi, at the end of the overnight sleeper from Helsinki, which will take your car as well. Buses run to the village in season. Staying in the middle of Pyhä you can manage without a car. For Luosto, the trailheads further out or the villages around, you will want one.
Why stay in a cabin here
A hotel room is a room. A cabin is a cupboard that dries five sets of wet gear overnight, a kitchen you can actually cook in, a sauna you heat when you feel like it, and enough floor that eight people are not standing in each other's way. Our own team cleans and checks every cabin between stays, and we live here too: if the water heater sulks at nine on a Sunday, the person who picks up the phone is local. You are booking direct on this page, so the price you see is the whole price, with no third-party commission on top.
Arriving and settling in
There is no key to collect and no desk you have to reach before it shuts. The address, the door code and everything else practical arrive in a cabin guide linked from your booking, so a flight that lands late is just a flight that lands late. The kitchens are set up for cooking rather than reheating, most cabins have a sauna, and all of them have somewhere to hang gear that came home soaked. Bed linen, towels and the final clean can be added to the booking if you would rather not carry or do them.
