Dog sled driving is a thrilling wintertime activity! There are two husky farms that offer dog sled rides of different lengths in the Pyhä-Luosto area: Arctic Husky Farm and Luminenä Husky and Samojedi farm.

Seeing northern lights on a bright winter night is a truly magical experience that every Lapland visitor dreams of! Near Pyhätunturi there are many good spots to see these colorful lights of the arctic skies. Northern lights (also known as aurora borealis) are best visible on clear skies during evenings and nights from early fall to late spring. The best places to see the light phenomenon are up on the fells and far from any light pollution. Heat of a hazy smoke sauna, dip in an icy lake, and idyllic Lapland scenery. What could be more Finnish? At Karu Lodge in Luosto you can experience a truly unique and relaxing sauna bath in a traditional deadwood smoke sauna. In Pyhä you can visit Kairosmaja smoke sauna, which is a public lakeside sauna near Pyhäjärvi.

Disc golf is an easy, fun and cheap outdoor activity for the whole family. Disc golf courses have lanes that start from a tee pad and end at the target, which is usually a disc golf “basket”. Plants, trees and terrain make each course unique and challenging. During the game the players get to try long glides and shorter throws that require more accuracy. Just like in regular golf, the goal is to reach the target with as few throws as possible. The disc golf courses at Pyhä and Luosto are free of charge and open for everyone.

In Pyhä and Luosto, there are plenty of good fishing spots, for example catching rainbow trout, but also for plenty of other fish species. Fishing is a peaceful way to spend time in the beautiful nature of Finnish Lapland year-round. The local tourism companies also offer different fishing trips for both beginners and more experienced fishers. Before fishing, make sure you have all the needed fishing permissions from Metsähallitus and the permission for fishing from the owner of the water area.

Canoeing down a river or a lake is a relaxing way to discover Lapland’s nature during spring, summer and fall when the fall colors paint the scenery beautifully. Go with the flow and enjoy the silence of the northern wilderness. Pyhäjoki river and Kitinen tributary are the best places for canoeing in Pyhä-Luosto. You can rent a canoe or a kayak for yourself or take a guided tour.

There are two reindeer farms in Pyhä-Luosto, Reindeer Park Kopara and Jaakkola Reindeer Farm. In these farms you get to greet the reindeer both independently and with guidance, and if you’re willing to, you may also take a ride in a sleigh pulled by reindeer. The visit to a reindeer farm is an authentic cultural experience, during which you’ll also learn more about history and traditions of reindeer herding.

Cross-country skiing is one of the most essential wintertime activities. Pyhä’s vast and versatile ski trails and services ensure that you will enjoy the sport no matter what your experience level is. You can for example grab a pair of rental skis, ski around the Ukko-Luosto fell, and take a rest at a cozy café by the ski tracks.

Tajukangas Ice Fall is a 30-meter-high waterfall that freezes over in winter to form a beautiful ice climbing wall. On the top of the frozen wall, you can watch over the amazing fell scenery of Pyhä. The best time to visit Tajukangas is in the evening, when the wall is illuminated with colorful spotlights that resemble the northern lights.

Snowshoeing is a versatile and adjustable winter sport, which can be done almost everywhere. Those who enjoy a peaceful walk may choose a flatter route, while those up for a challenge can quickly but steadily climb the slopes of the arctic hills. Snowshoeing is an excellent winter sport even in cold temperatures, since you can flee the cold arctic wind into the thick forest.

Ready, set, go! Put pedal to the metal and speed into the snow and ice! Close to Pyhätunturi, in the Pyhä Safari’s Ice Karting track, it’s possible to speed along an icy track and race against your friends for the championship of the Ice Karting. Ice Karting is very similar to ordinary karting, but the go-karts for Ice Karting are equipped with studded tires and a studier body to fit the extreme conditions of the winter.
