Reindeer farms and safaris in Pyhä-Luosto

Reindeer farms and safaris in Pyhä-Luosto
There are two reindeer farms in Pyhä-Luosto, Reindeer Park Kopara and Jaakkola Reindeer Farm. In these farms you get to greet the reindeer both independently and with guidance, and if you’re willing to, you may also take a ride in a sleigh pulled by reindeer. The visit to a reindeer farm is an authentic cultural experience, during which you’ll also learn more about history and traditions of reindeer herding.

Reindeer are an essential part of the arctic nature of Lapland. Their wide hoofs, called koparat in the language of the area, make walking in the snow easy, and their thick fur allows them to survive the cold temperatures. Reindeer are exceptional deer, because also the female reindeer grow antlers, which they then use to defend themselves against carnivores. Reindeer were tamed from wild mountain reindeer, since they were needed for carrying and pulling purposes in the past. Herding reindeer in its modern form is a hundreds of years old trade. The reindeer in Lapland are half-domesticated animals, and all of them have an owner.
