Lampivaara Amethyst Mine

Lampivaara Amethyst Mine
Lampivaara Amethyst Mine, located in the middle of Pyhä-Luosto National Park, is one of the world's few gem mines that welcomes visitors to its premises. It is also the only active amethyst mine in Europe! The amethysts of Lampivaara have formed 2000 million years ago, when ancient Alp-like mountains ruled the Pyhä-Luosto scenery. The mine is currently open from Tuesday to Saturday.

During summer, visitors can reach the Amethyst Mine by hiking or biking to the Lampivaara Café located in the Pyhä-Luosto national park. Lampivaara Café is also the starting point for the Amethyst Mine tours. In the winter time you can travel to the mine by skiing, snowshoeing, or by taking the special Amethyst Pendolino, a warm wagon that’s pulled through the snow by a snow machine. You can hop on the pendolino from the center of Luosto, Ukkoluosto parking lot or Lampivaara Café.

During the Amethyst Mine visit you get to hear interesting stories about the history and geology of the nearby area, and about the amethyst gems, their use and myths and beliefs related to them. At the end of the tour every visitor gets to dig their very own amethyst and take it home as a souvenir. Since the mine is located at the top of the Lampivaara fell, the views of the surrounding fell tops and forests are spectacular.

Lampivaara Amethyst Mine follows the principles of sustainable development. No machine power is used when mining the gemstones, and only a few selected resellers, as well as the mine’s own shops, sell the gems mined at Lampivaara. Sustainable mining guarantees that future generations can keep enjoying the unique mine and its treasures. In addition to amethysts, other gemstones such as quartz are also found and mined at Lampivaara.
